Visualize Your Genealogy with Charts
Download and Print
Charts help to visualize your ancestry from a descendant’s view, a
pedigree view, a family view, and bow tie. Some programs will allow users to customize
these charts with what information will be printed besides the person’s name,
such as: birth date and place, marriage date and place, death date and place. They
should also provide the ability to choose the number of generations and options
to export the results. If you need to download and print blank forms, see the link
on the right for free genealogy charts and forms.
Descendants Visual
A table that start with an ancestor and lists their offspring is a descendants
chart. The person chosen from a genealogy will be at the top of the page with their
spouse. The next row(s) of information will be their children and their children’s
spouse. The next row of information is the grandchildren, and so on.

Pedigree Visual
A pedigree view of a family begins at the left side of the page, in the center
of the page. The rest of the page will have that person’s father’s direct descendants
(his parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so forth) to the right of the
person and on the top half of the page. Each generation is cascaded and the father
is on the top and the mother under the father. The same information for the person’s
mother’s ancestors will be displayed on the bottom half of the page.

Family Visual
Genealogy charts for a family view is a little bit more like a report. It
starts with an ancestry and then their spouse and then their children. Usually all
known facts and sources are listed in this report.

Bow Tie Visual
Genealogy charts that fan out are called bow tie charts. It has the same
information as a pedigree chart but it is presented graphically in a different view.
Some programs will graphically show the results like a “bow tie”, with the maternal
side of the starting person, on one side and the paternal on the other with the
starting person is in the middle of the knot. Some programs will graphically show
it in a top and bottom view, instead of a left to right view. (Thus turning the
bow tie ninety degrees). Again, the mother’s side will be represented on one side
of the page and the father’s direct descendants on the other side.
