Visualize Your Genealogy with Charts
You can visualize your family from a descendant’s view, a pedigree view, a
family view, and bow tie. Some programs will allow you to customize these charts
with what information will be printed besides the person’s name, such as:
birth date and place, marriage date and place, death date and place. You should
also be able to choose the number of generations and be able to export the results
so you can visualize your family tree through various charts.
Descendants Chart
Genealogy charts that show a descendents family, can start with anyone you
choose in your tree. The person you choose will be at the top of the chart with
their spouse. The next row of information will be their children and their children’s
spouse. The next row of information is the grandchildren, and so on.
Pedigree Chart
A pedigree view of a family begins at the left side of the page, in the center
of the page. The rest of the chart will have that person’s father’s
direct descendants (his parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so forth)
to the right of the person and on top half of the page. Each generation is cascaded
and the father is on the top and the mother under the father. The same information
for the person’s mother’s family will be displayed on the bottom half
of the page.
Family View Chart
Genealogy charts for a family view is a little bit more like a report. It
starts out with anyone you choose in your tree and their spouse. It also lists the
children and their spouse. Usually all known facts and sources are listed in this
report.
Bow Tie Chart
A bow tie chart, looks like a bow tie. It has the same information as a pedigree
chart but it is presented graphically in a different view. Some programs will graphically
show the results like a “bow tie”, with the maternal side of the starting
person, on one side and the paternal on the other with the starting person is in
the middle of the knot. Some programs will graphically show it in a top and bottom
view, instead of a left to right view. (Thus turning the bow tie ninety degrees).
Again, the mother’s side will be represented on one side of the chart and
the father’s direct descendants on the other side.
